This is my second Ooma as I decided to use another for my home business. I had my first unit for over 6 months now, and I am so impressed, that it made no sense to keep my business line. First off, this is very simple to setup, so have no fear. You put the ac adapter in the hub, connect it to your internet connection, and you now have a working phone line, instantly. Actually, two phone lines! You go to their web site, choose a phone number you like, setup voicemail (you can either check voicemail on the hub, or online, or in your email!), and plug in your phone to the hub.

I have a wireless phone system with multiple handsets. I simply put the wireless base as the phone on the hub, and I now have four phones in the house. If someone is using the phone, and there is another phone available, there is no waiting! You have a second line to make or receive calls. If you only have wired equipment, you use a "scout" that you can plug in to any electric outlet, and you have another phone jack. If you want to keep your normal landline and use Ooma, you can do that too, but I don't know why you would. I don't.

I was using Skype as my only service for over a year, and I promptly ended that with this experience. You do not have to leave your computer on, and remember, voicemail is online, so you don't have to use the hub for that at all if you don't want to.

It's simple, sleek, and oddly fun. I love bragging about it. I feel like I won a prize. Seriously, call anywhere in the US, anytime, with a real phone number, for free. The only cost would be minimal per minute charges calling outside the USA. But still no bill, as you fill that account like a phone card. Pay as you go. But I cannot remember the last time I ever called outside USA.

Sound quality is just like a normal phone. Unlike Skype where you take what you can get, if you get anything.

Up front - I love Ooma. The quality is crystal-clear, the features are great. I believe this is an incredible value even when compared to other VoIP services (in fact I just canceled my Vonage account for Ooma).

Setup is an absolute breeze. The easy to follow startup guide estimates about 20 minutes - but it really takes about 5. You go online, register your device, plug it in, and are good to go.

You can then enjoy free phone service for life. For a bit more (still way less than Vonage), you can get their premiere package which include a bunch of useful features.

The scout is a neat little unit that you plug into a land-line phone jack, and will communicate with your base unit. It allows you to plug in an additional phone and - BAM - you have a two line phone system (at no additional cost).

If you are paying $50 per month for your phone bill, combined local and long distance, you are already buying 2 Ooma core packages. At the end of the year you are spending $600, and if you bought 2 Ooma core packages you would only be spending $500. So you saved 100 this year, and 600 next year, and on, and on, and on.

I own my home now, but the last place I rented. It was a condo that I spent 60 grand in rents over 11 years, and it was only selling for 40k when I rented it. Finally I moved out, and the owner sold it for $150k; ouch. You would have 2 phone numbers with 2 Ooma hubs (with 9 more available per hub for $5 each per month if you wanted to have them) so for a little bit more each person in the house could have their own phone number, with its own distinctive ringing tone, and voice mail box, plus you could assign each number to a hub or scout. So for 12 dollars x 2 per month you have 4 phone numbers. Everyone has their own private number.

Or if you are buying a router from scratch, you might consider D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N Wireless Router which has the gigabit router built right in.

Myself I am running my Ooma hubs right off of a Netgear Wireless N Router which has the faster N wireless, but the ports are only 100 instead of a Gig, but that doesn't matter, because anything that is coming off of the net isn't faster than 1.5 to 5 with my connection, so 100 is overkill, and the phones don't need anywhere near that, and then I am hooking one of the 4 ports on the router up to an 8 port gigabit switch for internal networking traffic.

The incredible thing about a single or double Ooma hub is that with the scout, you can plug a separate phone into the scout, and if someone is already on the phone, and an incoming call comes in, it will ring on the scout, and someone else can answer it, or you can let the included voice mail get it. If you are already on the phone, and someone else in the house wants to make a call, they just pick up the phone that the scout is attached to, get a fresh dial tone, and make the independent call. That is what is meant by having 2 lines instead of one, they just share the same phone number. Plus you can conference call both lines if you want by simply pressing down both the number 1 and 2 line buttons at the same time. With 2 Ooma systems you could do a 4 way.

I could go on for hours, but in a nutshell, this is VOIP for free. Why pay Vonage, or Lingo $25 plus per month in rent, when you can just purchase a single Ooma core package and own it? If you are paying for regular phone service, you are going to be spending the money for an Ooma hub or two this year anyhow, the only difference is that you own the Ooma hub and your own dial tone, and with the rental you have the privilege of paying for another Ooma hub next year, and next year, and next year. This really is a no brainer, and all with perfect phone clarity, and includes more free calling features that the phone company charges extra for.

One more point worth making is that you can transfer your existing phone number from the phone company over to your Ooma device. Now you own your own phone number. The government wanted a free enterprise environment, so they passed a law that mandates that people can keep their phone numbers, and be able to transfer them over to another phone service if they wish to. Competition is good for everybody. You can also get a new local number from Ooma when you activate the phone. You also have the option of getting a phone number from Ooma that is outside of your service area if you wish to have a friend or relative be able to call you at their local rates.

If you wish to disconnect your phone line, and pay zero monthly phone service to the phone company, that is easy to do also. If you are running DSL, you can request a "dry line" for just your DSL service to run through, and then disconnect your regular phone line. Wah lah, no phone bill, you are only paying them for your broadband connection.

I have been using the Ooma service with hub and scout for 7 months now, and I can tell you that the longer you use it, and start adding up the savings, realizing how much money you would have spent renting your phone line, plus the quality of service it provides, the more you love it. My Ooma is the "core system", which included the hub and a Scout unit. Both devices are very nice looking, a clean design that looks good in any room/decor. Plus they are not big at all, the hub being the size of a small book, and the Scout being about the size of a Blackberry device. The buttons are backlit when activated with a soft pinkish/red light.

Why am I telling you about my carrier setup? I'll get to that in a minute.

What I like about Ooma...it took me just minutes to set it up, plugging it into my router and DSL modem, and another phone jack in another room for the Scout. Set up was a breeze and all of the ports are clearly labeled (Wall, Phone, Modem, Home, Power) About all you need to provide are an internet connection and a phone handset. After the simple setup, I was able to pick a phone number on Ooma's website and start using the system immediately. I also like the sound quality. Although I've never had VOIP at home, I use it at work. I found the Ooma to be clear and crisp, just as good as my landline. I used the same handsets so I could evaluate apples and apples.

Also, it's nice to pay once for the Ooma hardware, and as long as you have an internet connection (which you are paying for anyway) and don't plan to buy any international calling service from Ooma, well then your VOIP phone service is essentially free! That's hard to beat. I don't use Ooma for international calls but the rates on their site appeared very competitive. You do have to pre-pay for international minutes.

You may be curious how you know when the Ooma line is ringing as opposed to your landline, if you are using similar/same phone handsets. Simple, Ooma has its own ringtone.

I also love the built-in features such as caller ID, call-waiting, and voicemail, things your phone company charges you extra for.

As far as other function features your phone line might support, such as faxing, Ooma makes no guarantee faxing will work, which is because faxing does not always work well on VOIP, so its a technology issue, not a product issue. In my case, it did work, just by hooking up my printer/fax as I already used it, on a splitter with a phone I have an HP all-in-one that's a few years old, a 2400 model, and the faxing worked fine on Ooma after several faxes, incoming and outgoing.

Calls to 4-1-1 apparently generate a charge to you from Ooma. That is what it says in my user manual; I haven't tried to call 4-1-1 yet.

A note in general - I still have a landline. If you are going to shut off your landline and replace it with Ooma, just keep in mind the simple rule about VOIP - its on a PC/internet system - so if you lose power to your home or your internet connection, you can lose your phone service until power is restored. So if you are shutting your landline make sure you have cell phones and/or a UPS backup for your PC, router, etc.

Ooma also offers something they advertise as "Instant Second Line". The Ooma unit is able to handle this second line, but you'd have to pay Ooma for it.

Now, back to why I mentioned my carrier specs, and the one thing I am leery about with Ooma. Resources. Namely your internet resources. The unit needs only 256kbps upload speed to operate, although Ooma recommends at least 384kbps. Doesn't sound unreasonable, but you need to understand that the Ooma hub is essentially a gateway, so like many "peer to peer" concepts, your bandwidth gets used to route other users' data (in this case Ooma calls). Your system can become what is known as a supernode, such as the concept used by Skype for VOIP or LimeWire for P2P Data Sharing. I do want to stress I have just started using Ooma and haven't seen any impact to my bandwidth, but you do need to understand the infrastructure and how your bandwidth could be used.

All in all, this is an exciting product which works as advertised and I consider it a stable device and system. After your initial purchase you have free phone service, with the only other costs being the optional calls to Information, international calls, and/or a second line (Ooma Premier). I like it - a lot.

I have tried them all from the start...Sun Rocket, Vonage, Skype etc. But bandwidth issues and choppy lines were constant issues, that is until I installed my new best friend, Ooma.
Set up was a breeze and the packaging was as great as the goods inside. Total voice clarity, 911 service, 2 lines and 2 separate voice mail account (with premium service), plus it works without your computer having to be on and doesn't take a chunk of memory like Skype, all this makes it a MUST HAVE.
Skype rates internationally are cheaper..but if they can't hear you, it's a waste of money.

Hello All,
I bought an OOMA about 8+ months ago with one scout (added a 2nd system later on). Here is our setup.
1. NO LANDLINE required.
2. Using with Cable Broadband on Comcast.
3. Two OOMA Hubs (personal and business) and 2 OOMA Scouts.
4. 2 x 2 Line Panasonic Cordless system to use dual line capabilities.
5. Wired into home wiring so as to avoid unsightly clutter of hardware.

FIRST SYSTEM (Personal Use):
The OOMA hub is plugged in to our Apple Extreme Basetation, out of sight out of mind. Gave the OOMA internet access through the router and voila...phone service is live. NO land line is required. I know OOMA says you can use your existing land line, but it is not a necessity to use this system. They will issue you a new number or port your number over if you do not have or want a land line.

We took line one of the OOMA hub (marked home) and wired it into our home wiring (line 1 - our home is wired for 2 lines)....again very easy and no problem - the phones in the house starting working at once.

Challenge - we have a 2line phone system - so how can you use OOMA with a two line system and use the 2 line features of OOMA.

Since line one was wired and working we needed to get line 2 wired. I took the line 2 out of the ooma hub (marked WALL), wired into home wiring (line 2 jack in the basement), and used the ooma scout to complete the phone line network this system creates.

Line one was already going into the panasonic, so the scout now allowed us to plug in line 2. Voila - 2 lines on a 2 line system with one scout and one telephone number. Its like call waiting on steroids.

NOTE: You can also get multiple numbers with different ring patterns to make this more effective.

The panasonic system has 4 handsets - so now no matter where we are we have a 2 line phone system without the need for more scouts.

The scout itself does everything the OOMA hub does in a small package....so its easy to put in the kitchen and or bedroom and have it look somewhat decent.

SECOND SYSTEM:
Simply used near a telephone in the basement/home office...no fancy setup...works great with a 2 line Panasonic System.

I hope this helps you in deciding to purchase this system. Please let it be known that I am a consumer...not affiliated with OOMA....I simply LOVE this product. I no longer have monthly bills and thus we have recovered the cost of this system already.

Still going strong. WE now have two ooma hubs and two scouts at home. One for personal use and one for business. Works great...no complaints yet. Our broadband is now all cable - about 10-12mbps down (comcast) and 1.5mbps up...sometimes more on down/up in burst mode.

OOMA has also added a bunch of new features for people on the premier plan...ie. community black lists. Basically a GREAT feature.....they have created a blacklist that is shared by all members so that we can all contribute to block useless telemarketing calls etc.....you send them directly to voicemail or block them all together. AWESOME!.

People have emailed me and asked if this system works for faxing....I dont know that I can answer that since I have not really tried sending/receiving faxes with it. Please do chime in and let us all know if it works.

I have also had questions about what I think of OOMA and the business model...while I do not know the specifics, I am not afraid of using it as there seems to be enough people contacting me about purchasing it...I feel that it will be around long enough for everyone to recover the cost of the system.

It is important to understand that you should disconnect the wiring from the local telephone company coming into your house before you wire any VOIP device into your home wiring. Basically the phone company wiring carries current into your house and OOMA also outputs some level of current to your phone lines....too much could cause an issue.

This is my 2nd Ooma review, the first one has been up and running for about 9 months, and the only real gripes I have are one or two dropped calls and the odd bad connection.
I will at this point strongly recommend using this as a stand alone line with a new local number provided by Ooma. I don't like the piggybacking idea and have heard of several people suffering fees from their local phone companies after they tag the Ooma system onto their internet and phone setup. I have also noticed bad days with the machine, and considering how it works by peer sharing of internet connection to speed up dialling and clarity, there are times when I have been cut off mid conversation, and then had several missed attempts at reconnection.
Also international calls often dial through and you can hear the person on the other end, but they cannot hear you so you must hang up and try again, this can get frustrating. All that said, a 2 minute connection procedure to any existing hardline internet connection (doesn't work wirelessly in case you were wondering) gives you FREE and unlimited calling local and long distance within the US. The international plan involves setting up a credit card on the website and "adding" minutes.
This is where the Ooma scores the best. Before using Ooma my monthly phone calls to Europe (UK mainly) were on average $30 - this was on an international plan ($5 per month) and then calls at only 8c per minute, which is pretty cheap. Since having the Ooma I have spent only $80 in 9 months! Calls are 2.9c - do the math.
Is the Ooma cost effective for just US usage? Well that's subjective and you need to figure out your break even point before laying out $250 for this package(which is $150 cheaper than it used to be by the way). Is it perfect? No, then again what system is? Vonage for example has a lot of VoiP problems and involves a monthly agreement. This new set which includes a "Scout" for additional phone jack points is certainly good value, just do some research on your existing bills first.
Overall I rated it 4 stars, not only for all that I've mentioned but because it is SO easy to install. The online account information and remote retrieval of voice mail is great, and the Scout adds a second line for free. A lot of people are in this weird space between the desire to have a home phone and your complete lack of need for one. Everyone in your family probably has a cell phone, and yet your bank, your kids school, etc insist on having your home phone number? Your cell reception isn't very good at home?... but you're sick of fund raising calls during dinner, sick of other peoples collection calls?

Ooma offers free calls for life, or more precisely free calls until Ooma goes out of business. The device is easy to set up -- activate online, plug one end into your router or cable modem, the other into your phone, you're done. Setup shouldn't take much more than 5 mins. If you have a number to transfer, that takes a couple days. After that your phone pretty much works like normal. The Ooma has e911 meaning you can call 911 on it -- which is a big deal, skype doesn't support this currently.

The worked out of the box for me. One bit of weirdness -- you have to dial 1 before dialing an area code, otherwise you'll get a fast busy signal. I honestly haven't had a home telephone in years ... so this seemed a bit weird to me.

If you can't tell already, I really like the Ooma. There's a couple things i'd like to see in the future -- a device with a handset built in. I realize the concept of the Ooma is to replace your phone company -- but why not go a step further and replace my old, antiquated phone to? I'm hoping Ooma will come out with a nice handset with an LCD and a bit slicker interface to their service.

**EXTRA** I am a "Linksys CIT 400 Skype Phone" user, so I'd like to contrast the few for anyone who may be interested. The biggest difference is Skype's fee's. The best deal you can wrangle from Skype is unlimited out, and about 10c for an incoming call. This is a pretty *weird* asymmetry. I've also had billing problems with Skype -- Im on their unlimited plan yet I am regularly charged for outgoing calls that should bee free. This doesn't feel like an accident to me but an intentional draining of my skype account. Plus, Skype is just not reliable. I call out and get errors frequently, having to dial 4 or 5 times, and calling in from a landline seems to be a crapshoot at best. I have been using it for about a week. Setup was a snap. I did have one issue, and I had to call support, but there was no hold time and the friendly assistant get me up and running in a few minutes.

I can see this being great for people that want a second line, while keeping an integrated backup hard phone line, or just free long distance and online voicemail in addition to their regular phone line. Another great use is for people with parents or others that live in another area code, whom they talk to a lot. You can register your second number in their area code and when they call you, it's a local call for them. Awesome!

The online voicemail is what sealed the deal for me. It's also nice to have caller ID, which would have cost me a whopping $15 extra from my phone company. It will pay for itself in 8 months, based on what I was dishing out to Frontier. Earlier than that if I consider I just had the basics from them and now I have all these cool features. Plus, compared to my hard line, the quality seems to be a tad better.

It's still new and apparently becoming a very popular product. Who knows if the network will maintain the quality. Will there be any improvements, new features? So, I'll report in in about a month to give you an update on how it is going.

I have had the Ooma system for about 10 days. The installation was trouble free and I was up and going in about 15 minutes. The voice quality is outstanding! One caveat is that I couldn't get my fax machine running. On Oomas website it says it may be difficult. I guess some people have had luck following the directions on the website, but I did not. I've been using Ooma for the past 7-8 months and love the service. Based on what I was paying Ooma will pay for itself in about 11 months.

I switched from Vonage and the quality of calls with Ooma is much better. With Vonage there were often quality issues (person I was calling couldn't hear me, congestion, dropped calls, etc.). I have been using OOMA for a week now. Installation quick and easy.
I have been using the VOIP phone for about 7 years now. I have been a vonage customer, sun rocket, packet8 etc.. While I loved sun rocket for the quality and the price, unfortunately it didn't last.
OOMA voice quality is superb. I have no issues at all. I had a couple of issues with the caller id and the answering machine but they were resolved by the ooma technical help promptly. I have decided to keep my ooma hub and even transfer my number. OOMA lacks certain features such as the call forwarding, simultaneous ring etc, but I hope they will continue to add features. There is no need to repeat all the great things other reviews have said. One thing that makes me give it a 4-star rating is that there is no call-forwarding capability. To start the equipment and setup is easy and of good quality. I was very happy upfront with my purchase. However, I have yet to get my caller ID working after a month of numerous attempts. I've called the OOMA service desk may times plus a number of emails with no resolution. Each time I called I got different answer, processing error, provider problem, timing issue with the update, yada, yada. In the end they all said 'it takes 7-10 days for callerID to process'. Well 30 days later no callerID. Very frustrating. So, silly me I decide to go ahead and port my number because one of the agents said that would fix everything up. 20 days later my original home number was suddenly disconnected. No notifiction, no email, nothing. So I call the OOMA help desk yet again, as it turns out the phone port was in fact performed which caused the disconnect message. It would have been sorta nice to know in advance that the port was scheduled so all my called didn't BOUNCE but hey I figure what the heck at least it got done. So, I asked "What about callerID, is it working noooow"? Answer, you guessed it 'Wait' for it to propogate ..... doh

This product does work as promised. There is very little set-up time involved. Biggest issue that I had was using the proper power-up sequence. This unit is a little temperamental if it is powered up out of sequence. This process took a little time on the phone with customer service but I did get the issue resolved. For the money I feel this phone system is a very good investment.

If you are close to a Micro Center store they are selling the same unit for $229.00. Pricing is excellent for this product.
