I spent a lot of time reading reviews about Ooma, and reading the forum pages on Ooma's website before and after purchasing Ooma. The general impression I received was that the vast majority of people are very satisfied, and the problems mostly had to do with poor customer service, or people that didn't do all their homework before buying. And now after two months of using the service, plus ordering a 2nd Ooma system for my business, I can say that I would rate the product 4 3/4 stars (nothing is flawlessly perfect, but overall I had to go with the 5 star over the 4). And incidentally, it is very interesting to me to see that 2/3rds of the ratings here are 5 stars.

We ordered our first Ooma system for our home. It took about 4 weeks for the number to be ported. Not only are we not paying a phone bill now, but yesterday Qwest even sent us a refund check! One nice thing I recently thought of is that Ooma works transparently: in other words, once it is fully up and running, you don't even think of your phone system as different at all. Everything just works!

I'll try to list some of the COOL features that are better than our previous phone company (besides no phone bill!):

1. The hub and scout system working like an answering machine. We will get home, and see the "play" button blinking red, and all we have to do is push it to retrieve messages. Before, we had the blinking light on our phone, and had to call in to get our message (no answering machine)
2. When listening to messages, if you don't want to listen to the whole thing, we just push the "trash" icon to instantly delete it. Before, we had to listen to the whole thing before having the option to delete.
3. Missed calls are emailed to us, so if we are away from home, we simply log into Ooma lounge to hear them.
4. Calling outside the country very cheap. So far, we've only called Canada, and I think it is something like 1.5 cents/minute.

The cool things I look forward to using at work with the premiere service are:

1. multi-ring; for when I'm away from my office, and the phone will ring to my cell phone simultaneously--and I can choose to answer or let it go to voicemail.
2. community blacklist, and other spam controls.

One of the cool future-features is some kind of auto forwarding of calls when the system detects the internet is down.

As for voice quality, I have noticed that it is not perfect, but it is as good or better than our previous phone company. The thing that seems to make the most difference are the types of phones people are using. Sometimes I will hear a little crackle, or a slight echo, or a slight delay. This seems to happen a little more when talking long distance, or calling to a cell phone. And like I say, it really isn't much different than our previous phone company. And in general, I simply don't notice it, as I guess I am used to a few imperfections here and there from every phone system I've ever used!

As for setup, one thing that caused a little trouble was my NOT understanding that if you have DSL, you have to make sure to have your phone company put it on its OWN LINE (different than the phone line) before you port your number. Otherwise, when the phone company cancels your phone line, it will cancel your DSL as well! Fortunately, I read about this before our port was completed. But next, I didn't realize that with the DSL being on a new line, I ALSO needed to reset my router for the new DSL! The phone company started our new DSL on a Thursday, then canceled the old DSL Friday, so we didn't know about resetting our router until we were without internet service!! So the thing to do, is not only disassociate your DSL from your phone line, but as soon as it happens, get on the phone with your DSL provider, and get your DSL modem setup for the new service. I hope this makes sense. For us, it meant about 2 days with no internet. Maybe for some, the phone company automatically updates the DSL modem, so you don't have to be without internet for a few days!

Lastly, while it's good to read about all the complaints, and bad experiences people have with any product, remember that for every one complaint, there are probably hundreds of people with no complaints! After we worked out these few glitches, we hardly even go to the forums for help, and we have no need for customer service, because it just works! And we are saving approx. $40/month (it will be paid for in about 5 months!).

Good luck to all.

I just want to add my voice to the chorus of other happy customers. I didn't buy it at Amazon (bought through Costco for various reasons), but if you're on the fence about this product, I say just do it!
I've only had it installed for a little more than a week, but it works great with very few tweaks. Do yourself a favor and go to the Ooma forums and do some reading on the various things you can do to maximize your experience with this product.
You'll also find some people who are having troubles with it, but for me it's been a great experience so far, and from what I can tell they are always trying to improve the service.
I have cable internet with only 3MB down and 256K up (less than they recommend), but mine has worked very well. I did limit my QOS upload to 100K, which actually seemed to improve my service.
Once I get my number ported, I will be more than happy to kick my local phone provider to the curb!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I have used it for a month. It is a truly wonderful phone. Throughout the years since VOIP came to the consumer market, I have tried many services including Vonage, SunRocket, TMobile(VOIP), SKYPE, Truephone(iPhone)and three others; with and without computer on. I have frequently used some of these overseas. OOMA is exceptionally good however unlike Vonage it is not a mobile device for travel use. I have one OOMA stationed in China and is working perfectly. This product was absurdly easy to setup. I went to the website, entered my code, signed up for the premier service (Multiring is awesome)and then plugged my unit in. That was it. I put the Ooma device after my airport Extreme (Apple Router) and apparently the NAT-PMP went through without a hitch, which is a bonus because I can not afford to put the ooma device as the primary routing device in my network. I have specific networking needs that require a high end router.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

So far it has done everything it said it would. Works great, easy setup. I am working on getting my number ported, and since I have DSL on the line that is being ported it will be a rough transition for a day. And as I read in a review before buying, customer service is hard to get a hold of, you will be on hold for 45 mins. But for me that was ok, I understand that its not the same as the phone company, since they aren't sucking hundreds of dollars out of me each month, they can't afford to hire as many customer service people as the phone company.
For the little hassles in the long run to save thousands of dollars, its worth it.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Ok, I got my Ooma system from amazon w/free shipping ++. When I opened the Ooma box I was surprised by how well everything is packaged. My concern is that for such a new and young company are they spending money wisely? I know of no other product that has invested in packaging like Ooma did. I'd reccomend they save a few bucks and invest in cheaper packing.

Pro: No more phone bill! I have an upload speed that is below what Ooma suggest and I've had no issues with voice quality or anything else. I use a cable internet provider so DSL people i can not speak for you.

Con:Installing was slightly confusing when first doing intial setup. I'm porting my number and chose to keep my orginal number in the process.

Got my ooma. Tried signing up, but no numbers in my area. Called ooma, less than 10 minute wait. They told me it usually takes 3-5 days to order a number in your area. They gave me a temporary number in my area code in the meantime. Same area code, but still a long distance number from where I live. 5 days later I had my new number and now I have a totally free phone with a local number. No access fees, no taxes, no nothing. I was paying $40 a month, plus $15-$20 in taxes and fees. At $50 a month, I will break even in 4 months with ooma. After that, I have a free phone as long as ooma stays in business. No bill at all.

I had Charter telephone and Quest before that. The voice quality is about the same. No complaints.

Tip:
Don't use email to contact ooma. I got zero response this way. Just call, wait time for me was less than 10 minutes.

I wish they would offer this without the scout for say $30 less. I live alone and have only 1 phone so I have no need for the scout.

All in all, a very positive experience.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I am very pleased with the ooma phone system. I had a little difficulty getting my modem to recognize the ooma hub, but after I got through that, it was a breeze hooking up. I am very pleased with how the system works and how well it works. It was a pleasure the day following installation, to call the phone company and request that they disconnect phone service. I was asked, is there anything we can do to keep you as a customer?? Well, no, I prefer no phone bills in the future. The ooma system is very impressive and I highly recommend it. I have had this system for about 3 months now and I have been happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a voip system. My call quality has been excellent, unlike the awful digital phone service I had with my cable provider. I decided on Ooma because I didn't want anymore monthly bills to pay for outdated technology (landlines), nor did I want to pay the $60 annual fee for a local Skype number. Even if Ooma doesn't survive in this economy, I think this is a brilliant idea and product. Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I bought this on the recomendation of a friend and after hooking it up I found the dirty little secret. They say it is an "Unlimited service" but it is limited to 3000 minutes per month for outbound calls. This is less then 2 hours per day. I have 6 people in my house and I will hit this limit in no time at all. This limit is disclosed in only a few places so beware! Also, and this may or may not be true, I have read that if you go over this limit you can be BILLED at an unkown rate and or disconnected without notice! I have yet to verify this but I am returning mine because of this misleading information. I only hope that I can get my 39.99 number porting fee back from Oooma.

3/26 Update
I found out today that a 1.9 cent per minute charge will be billed if you go over the 3000 min limit. Also, buying this device with a credit card authorizes the company to charge your card for any fees or overages.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

With only 2 days under my belt, I'll give you my initial impressions thus far and they are good.

I plugged the unit in just as easily as stated.
To be honest as an IT pro, it was pretty cut and dry anyway, with a slight twist as Vonage is continuing to provide inbound service while my number is being ported over.
Broadband (cable) went into my vonage router, a line from the router to the Ooma hub, and the phone line from the Vonage router into the hub as well.
Initially inbound calls took a bit longer to connect than expected, but after 2 or three had gone through it seems to have configured itself nicely.

Thus far I have just 2 issues.

The first is that outbound calls take much longer to connect, or even dial. It could be this is due to the fact the hub is not the primary hardware off the cable modem, or perhaps an aspect of Ooma. Time will tell.

My second issue is that voice mail access differs. I can no longer dial *123 to get to my mailbox, and have to use the public local number instead (no real problem).
Along with this is that my phone no longer alerts to new voicemails.
While this is certainly not a huge issue, I hope this all goes away when Vonage goes away.

I'll be sure to edit my review, but I am pleased thus far.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Nothing, that's what. I installed it four weeks ago and there is absolutely no difference in call quality from my Time Warner digital phone service. Takes a while to get your phone number ported over, but that's a minor hangup. Love the website interface.

This is absolutely the best VoIP device ever!!! this $200 purchase was a little hesitant, but now I see that the quality of the voice far surpasses AT&T landlines! You don't even need to use each phone with it's own scout. Pros: Great call quality and clarity. Easy installation. Device is actually smaller than it looks and is pretty sleek. They let you port your number. Pays for itself in savings.

Cons: Porting takes longer than it should. Device only comes in white. A little expensive.

I've had the Ooma about a week and I am very happy with it. The quality of the calls is impressive. People who I have talked to have not noticed any differences. The device was very easy to setup, it comes with very clear easy instructions. I was actually worried about how big the Ooma looked in pics, but when I took it out I was surprised at how small and sleek it was. It actually sort of looks like an Apple product. So kudos on the design. My only minor beef with the design is that it only comes in White. I would imagine later versions will offer more colors.

At $200 or more, the Ooma is pretty pricey, but I think it is a worthwhile investment considering that you won't pay for a home phone bill, so it basically pays for itself over time. They also actually let you keep your number and port it, but the porting process can take anywhere from 3 to 5 weeks. Porting is also an additional $30 bucks. In the meantime though, you have the option to use a temporary number while they handle the porting. Now personally I feel this takes too long. I have a cable connection and had my phone service through a cable provider with no contract. The porting process I feel should be smoother and should not take so long. But it's a minor gripe. I definitely recommend Ooma. It is a product that could change a lot of things in the industry, once people become more aware of it. There is no excuse to not have a home phone connection when you can purchase the Ooma.

ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills Top Quality

There has been a lot of fuss over what is and what isn't "unlimited" calling. Frankly, it was enough to cause me to hesitate from giving Ooma a try. Admittedly, Ooma has a 3k limit. However, since I have 2 daughters that have the home phones glued to their ears, I was worried that this might be a problem. So I contacted Tami Bhaumik, Vice President,Corporate Marketing and she replied:

"We do have a statement that we have a 3000 minute per month limit; however, this is in place as a safeguard for us against gross abuses. We have never shut a customer down that has gone over the 3000 minute limit. In fact, the vast majority of customers use on average 300-400 minutes per month. What we want to avoid are businesses using our system to run call centers. If a customer is using our product for residential and goes over the 3000 minute limit, we would not shut them down.

For what it's worth, I have a two daughters as well and I certainly know that they are on the phone all of the time as well. We have never exceeded the 3000 minute limit. I hope that this answers your question and I hope that you decide to give us a try. I wish you the very best and again, thank you for taking the time to enquire.

Best regards,
Tami Bhaumik
Vice President,
Corporate Marketing

So, just to clarify, I asked:

"Bobby B" on Amazon who says he works for ooma wrote:

Again, I wouldn't worry about being charged or counting your minutes - if you're using ooma mostly for residential usage, talk all you want.

My concern is "being charged" and counting minutes. If what Bobby B says is true, then as long as my usage is residential, which is all that it will be, then I don't have to worry about watching minutes or being charged if we go over the 3k. Is that correct?

Admittedly, we may never go over anyway, but I just don't want to have to worry about it. I just don't want to regret buying ooma a couple of months after purchase.

Ms. Bhaumik replied:

Bobby B is one of our product managers and he is correct in his statement. In reference to your earlier email, we do not differentiate between LD and local and we do not count minutes on inbound calls. That said, we will not shut you down if you exceed the 3000 limit if you are using it for normal residential usage. Please do not worry. You can sleep soundly knowing that we stand by our product and want you to have a very positive experience.

So, long story short, I bought Ooma from Amazon and look to save about $40 a month. Set up was extremely simple. The one setback is that I couldn't port my old number. Not a deal breaker. Tried out the LD and sounds great. So far so good. I'm holding on to my current phone service as a back up for a few days, just in case anyone uses my old number. But after that, goodbye phone bills, hello Ooma! Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I wanted to get rid of our landline completely and use mobile phones, but my wife wasn't ready to cut the cord. Wanting to lower our monthly expenses ($45/month for Comcast Digital Voice), I started looking at alternative phone providers.

I came across Ooma and was intrigued: it seemed like it would meet our needs (keeping our phone number and using our existing phones) and it had no monthly bill! Sounds great!

I took the plunge, thinking that I could always send it back if it didn't work well. When the box came, I quickly set it up and got it running after working through one hiccup. Other than the presence of the Scout (a little box that you put in front of your home phone to use Ooma), nobody was any the wiser. I still had my Comcast phone service, which went through the Ooma for inbound calls as well as outbound local calls. Ooma kicked in for long distance calls and used my Internet connection instead of my landline. It worked great!

After a few days to test it out, I decided I'd keep it, so I bought a premiere subscription ($100/year) which included the cost porting my number to Ooma (normally $40). I sent in the paperwork, and four weeks later my port was completed and I was done with phone bills! The Ooma handles all of my phone calls with no issues at all, and the quality is fantastic: on par with Comcast Digital Voice.

We've been Ooma-only for the past few weeks, and have experienced no problems so far. Count me among the satisfied customers.

I recently set up another Ooma at my mother-in-law's house, and soon she'll be phone-bill-free too!

A few notes:

1. Ooma does not have any monthly cost, unless you buy the Premiere subscription for $100/year. The only thing you'll need to pay for are international calls, which they charge at very competitive rates (see their website for details).

2. Since Ooma uses your internet connection, if your internet goes down (due to a power outage, etc) you'll have no phone service.

3. Ooma does have 911 support: I called 911 to verify that it works, and the operator immediately could see my name, address, and phone number.

4. If you don't want to port your phone number, you can dump your local phone service completely, get a new number, and be up and running as soon as you set up the box.

5. When you receive your Ooma, you need to activate it on the Ooma website before it will work. The directions are clear and it takes about a minute to activate the device.

6. You should typically put your Ooma between your cable/dsl modem and your home router. The device ships with the cable needed for this. You can also put the Ooma inside your home network, but you won't benefit from Ooma's ability to restrict internet traffic to insure good phone quality.

7. Right now, faxes over Ooma don't work very well, at least in my experience. I typically scan a document and email it as a PDF. Your mileage may vary. Ooma is working on implementing a standard FOIP (fax over IP) service in the future.

8. According to press releases, Ooma users and Skype users can talk for free. I imagine that if you call a Skype user's phone number they don't get billed for the call, and likewise if they call you they don't get billed. I haven't tried this. Before buying this product I read the enthusiastic reviews praising the sound quality. Unfortunately, the sound quality for me is unacceptable. I never have trouble understanding people I am speaking to, but I am frequently unintelligible to them. What can I say that others haven't already? So I'll just give you some tips and warnings.
The sound quality is perfect to me and as good and better than any other VOIP service I've used. Even Vocalocity that we used at work. Seems cleaner than land line "POTS" even.
I have very fast internet cable modem. I read that you should not try this if you have slow (512k) or lower.

Scout: Sound quality from the "scout" units is more compressed than from the core station due to networking between scout and core. Just be aware of that. That doesn't mean it's bad (it still sounds great for calls), but it's not technically the same quality. That's why they say to fax only from the core.
Suggest: Get a UPS battery backup for your DSL/Cable modem and Ooma unit for power outages.
Suggest: Ooma "Telo" is coming in Q3 of 2009. You may want to wait. I think I'll get Telo as well and still use this Ooma Core as a 2nd line (for free) or take it traveling for free calls.
Cost: You'll likely want to subscribe to premiere. Factor in $100 per year to the price.
Warning: Customer service is top notch. But it takes 30 minutes to get through. Use the support forums as much as you can if for questions.
This may not be for you if you want immediate CS.
Note: It takes about 1 month to 'port' your phone number. Be prepared.

I'm replacing my phone service with this. But it's even better if you continue to use your home phone service and just use Ooma for long distance. It can be set up to make local calls over your local phone line and LD over Ooma only.
So it works great as a LD only replacement.

You can try it in this set up if you want to test drive it.

Take advantage of the 30 day trial and give it a shot. It really isn't too good to be true. I was skeptical, but aside from the short musical tone to indicate it's special dial tone, we don't even notice the difference from traditional land line.

Ooma continues to add features and improve the service.

I'll save $300 this year ($600 f- $200 for core - $100 for premium) and $500 next year ($600 - $100 for premium) because of this.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Purchase ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

I'll be brief -

Setup - Took me about 10 minutes, most of that time was spent hunting a place to plug the darn thing into the power plug :) Activation online was easy, and I merely plugged the unit into my cable modem then the ooma into my linksys router. Turn it on and in about a minute the blue light of happiness.

Call quality - Excellent, as good or better than Ma-Bell was. Way better than Skype and magic jack. twice as good as vonage. No hissing, no echoing, its perfect.

Hardware - Really easy to use, nice large buttons for us that have less than perfect vision

Features - Having the ability to screen calls going to voicemail is something from the 80's, but ooma can do it digitally :) Do not disturb is nice, anonymous call blocking keeps the creditors and telemarketers at bay, but if one does slip through, they get added to my private block list.

Lounge (the website) - Able to hear voicemail at work, see who called and manage about every aspect. Love it.

The Monthly Bill - There is not one. Ever. This thing paid for itself fast!

Customer service takes weeks to respond to email
Sound quality is highly variable depending on bandwidth use
Local phone numbers are unavailable so local callers pay toll charges to talk to you.
If you port your local number it becomes the property of Ooma and cannot be re-ported to a different phone service, as per user agreement, eventhough an email from customer service indicates otherwise.
If I had the option of returning the unit, I would and just use calling cards for long distance, since I'm not confident that dropping my local calling service and phone number would be prudent.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I was exicted to get this product because I don't need an extra bill. But please read over everything before you disconnect your service with your old phone carrier because if you want to keep your old phone number you have to keep service with your old phone carrier for up to 6wks before the number can be ported to Ooma. I messed up disconnected my old phone provider & lost out on keeping my same phone number I have had for years. The product is really good and it works. The issue is that if you have a problem which cannot be solved on the Ooma lounge (website) you must call the service department. The service department does not pick up the phone (time and time again) nor do they respond to any emails.

Unfortunately, customer service is a make or break proposition. Most companies which do not have adequate customer service usually fail because it drives away customers.

If/when you buy this item be very careful about picking out your phone numbers because you cannot change them (easily). It requires a customer service call to change your numbers (which leads to the issues). It would have been nice if they'd have warned about picking out phone numbers on the web site.

** Edit - finally got through to support and they did take care of my issue. The support person was friendly and helpful. So my beef with support is access to support only.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I got monthly promotional e-mail from Costco, which has ooma product in it. I never heard about ooma until then. Free land line for life time attracted me, then I started to research this product on net. I have seen this product selling in all online leading retailers (that makes me to trust this product). I read user reviews about this product in different websites. I seen some complaints about customer services. I decided to take a risk with the customer service and ordered this product from Amazon for under $200.00 with no shipping and No tax. I got this product within 4 days in very nice packing that never got before in more than 100 online order for different product in several years. I am big online shopper. I opened the pack and active device online. I decided to take the new phone number instead of paying $39.99.
I got new number (choosen by my choice from the available 8 numbers) in my area code. Then I disconnect/turned off all my modems, routers, laptop.
I connected cable modem to ooma device, ooma device to router, router to my laptop. I powered on one by one and taken the phone to test. Guess what, no dial tone and I was worried for a while. I waited 30 seconds and I tried again and I got a dial tone. Big success in less than 10 mintutes. This is easiest installation you can ever imagine. I made lot of calls in 2 days, including International call to India, and the quality is dam good. I don't want any thing more than that.
Then I called my Lingo service and disconnect my serivce, they charged me $59.95 as I am cancelling 6 months before the agreement expiration date. But I am happay to pay that. I can save that $60.00 in just 2 months, after that every thing is FREE..FREE...I like this word.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I just want to make a quick comment; I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to giving product research it's due diligence before I buy. And I also know how tough it is to avoid the mob mentality when it comes to products taking knocks by an internet community that seems to be after the blood of anything new, no matter how good the product is.

Please take the negative reviews of ooma with a grain of salt. This is a GREAT idea supporting a very well designed, solid piece of equipment.

We've completely kicked AT&T to the curb and have been enjoying flawless service with ooma. I called customer service because I had questions about my modem being in bridge mode (and learned this is not a problem) and my hold time was 16 minutes .. so what?! That's very typical. So the concerns about customer care are, at worst, because of the response to the recent price drop of ooma and the subsequent sales boost. I'm sure growing pains are affecting the company. And that's fine with me.

ooma is a slick system. it looks great, feels great and the features available in the online ooma Lounge make one realize how 20th century AT&T is - and how 21st century ooma is. And this is all included with the cost of ooma.

The ability to simultaneously ring my iPhone any time my ooma number is called? The ability to receive email notifications of voicemail with attached audio files? The ability to get a second (or 3rd, 4th ..) number in my parents' home town so they merely have to dial locally to reach us? -- All part of the Premiere service .. for 12 measly bucks a month. And I'm more than happy to pay it. Don't need the extra features? More power to you.

Please do the math .. and think rationally about all the negative comments you *may* find online. You'll also find that actual owners of ooma are huge fans of it .. and the rest probably aren't bothering to post their good news. For us - ooma will pay for itself in 4 months and provide great new services all the while.

Pretty exciting times, these are. ooma fits right in with our web-based lifestyle with Netflix and Pandora streaming onto our TVs and 'remoting-in' to work via Remote Desktop.

I guess this wasn't a quick comment .. it's hard not to ramble about this thing.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I now have had OOMA for a few months and I couldn't be happier! You do need a high speed connection as they state on their website. I have seen negative reviews on OOMA's customer service. Most times I did get through to support, but there were a few times I had to wait. Just think of how many people are signing up for their service! I had a few questions about the product and you can get every answer on-line in the OOMA lounge instantly! I ported 2 lines and everything went smoothly. It took about 3 weeks as stated. Email support was very good. I also see some people saying that you should not waste your time with OOMA and try Magicjack (Magicjunk). I looked at the reviews for Magicjack and they were horrible. Poor voice quality, didn't work, cheaply made, etc. You also have to have your PC on 24/7 for it to work! Check for yourself! If you read the instructions and the information on OOMA's website and you have all the necessary parameters, high speed internet, porting is available, numbers are available in your area, then this product is for you! I now have 2 lines in my home with my original phone numbers which were ported over from Verizon and I am now saving over $50 a month. The voice quality is fantastic; call waiting, caller ID, voice mail, works perfect. The negative reviews have some merit, but I think most problems people encountered were due to not doing their homework thoroughly before making the purchase. Customer service problems? Have you tried to get someone on the phone from Verizon, Directv, Dishnetwork, Cablevision, Comcast, etc.? I bet you will be waiting on the phone for their tech support also! I hope OOMA is around for a long time as I do believe that OOMA is "the best thing since sliced bread"! And NO, I do not work for OOMA!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I purchased an Ooma in April of 2008 when the price dropped for the first or second time. The way my husband and I looked at it was: if the company lasted for 8 months (we were Vonage customers at the time) it would pay for itself. Anything else would be a bonus. So for almost four months now, we've been enjoying the bonus.

We have AT&T's DSL service (formerly SBC) and the fastest upload/download rate they offer. Call quality is generally excellent. We do occasionally have issues with echo and line static. I have to call one of my friends twice to get a great connection (which has turned into a joke). This can be annoying, but being it's free I can handle some mild incontinence. We've been playing with the idea of subscribing to the premium service, but haven't made the plunge quite yet. We also have a multi-line phone system, so we have a working phone in all the rooms we need one. I own a scout that is currently collecting dust but it was free at the time I purchased the system so it's not hurting my feelings too much.

Now I do have to say that I think the set-up documentation is VERY LACKING. OOMA, please fix this!

When I tried to get set up it turned into a two hour odyssey. Because I had never had a problem before I made the mistake of trying to set this up when I was home alone. It's a really pain in the backside to have a phone in one hand and an unhappy infant in the other.

Because there was no documentation to assist with advanced feature set-up I had no choice but to call customer service. I knew why the Ooma couldn't connect from experience - my DSL requires a user and password to allow any device access to the network. If I had not known this, I am sure the call would have taken a lot longer. If the documentation explained how to log into the Ooma box and allow me to set up advanced features however, no call would have been required. If you plan to try Ooma out, I would really recommend that you reacquaint yourself with how your ISP works with devices. It will save you a lot of time.

Also, setting up the Ooma device as your hub is a big mistake. The call quality was exceptional when we had the device in first position, but my bandwidth was almost non-existent. I was unable to use my VPN for my home office which was also a big problem. Once we switched the device order everything was fine. I haven't had a need to contact customer service since this was straightened out and have had no other issues with our line.

I would definitely recommend Ooma to anyone who is looking for a way to cut costs and has a decent high speed ISP line. We've been very happy with our purchase overall. There are some kinks to be worked out, but considering how much we're currently paying for service I don't mind it at all.

Ooma is an outstanding product. I had the phone service up and running within a few minutes of unpacking the product. My wife, who was highly skeptical that Ooma would work as advertised, is now telling all her friends and family about it. The calls are very clear. He have had no dropped calls or other problems. I was able to have my Dish Network TV satellite work through Ooma by putting a *99 dialing prefix in the Dish setup. My wife originally planned to keep our landline with minimal service, but she called and canceled that after the first week of Ooma service. Whether you get the basic or premier service, the value can't be beat. Don't hesitate if you are wondering about this service. It is one of the rare exceptions to the old adage that "it is too good to be true." Ooma is the real deal!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

We've been using Ooma since Feb 20, 2009 when our previous phone number was ported to the new system. Set up is easy and the system works well; initially we had some issues with voice quality, but I upgraded our Bright House cable modem service from the basic Roadrunner (7 Mbps) to Turbo speed (up to 15 Mbps) and it seems to have solved the problems. Voice quality is good now, and my internet connection is faster also, for another $10/month. Overall it seems to be a good system. Update in July 2009: we discontinued the system as my wife wasn't happy with the voice quality. The sound quality had too much "static" in it. After reading many reviews, I bought the system and was pleasantly shocked how easy it was to set up. The clarity of the phone calls is like a landline. My husband keeps wondering whats the catch, the cost of the system is nothing compared to dealing with a monthly phone bill. I'm extremely pleased with the overall experience of the system. I would highly recommend it to anyone.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Nothing special about the Ooma equipment
or the company's VOIP service except
that it is free for now with nonexistent
customer service, people left in the dark
and ignored about porting their current
numbers and other issues that matter
during the initial setup period.

I am paying $9.99 plus $5.94 in taxes
and fees for a total of $15.93 per month
for my VOIP phone service. Voicemail,
email, caller ID, E911, multiring, call
forwarding to any phone including your
cell phone, a real-time call log and
more, and online account management are
all included along with 500 minutes of
call time per month anytime anywhere
in the US and Canada with topnotch
customer service. Breaking up is hard
to do.

But I am seriously considering ordering
an Ooma from amazon.com and giving it a
try only because its basic service is
free at least for now and no other
reason while the company's customer
service or any other means of communicating
with the company have been declared dead.

ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills Best Quality

I purchase Ooma about 1 month ago. Setup was very easy and sound quality was near landline. But problem start when i needed to talk to customer support about deleting and adding a line since i could not do it in OOMA LOUNGE. I start contacting then by phone and e-mail since 3 weeks ago. To this day after several e-mails and phone calls nobody contacted me. That why i decided to return the unit to the retailer. If you are spending a lots of money on nationwide calls and you are not planing to do any kind of maintaineance that require customer service, then you might benefit from this product. But be carefull, since ooma actually is not a UNLIMITED CALLING SERVICE. If you have children that talk all day and total talk is more that 3000 minutes, OOma has the right to disconnect your service or charge you a lots of money without advance notice.(3000 minutes limit) and if you have DSL through your phone company then if you disconnect your service, you won't have broadband. Of course you can get broadband at the higher price without phone service. For us it didnot work since we use our cell phone to call nationwide. Also if Ooma goes out of business (and they are in financial trouble) then your service will be dicconected. (that is why their price is coming down too).

I purchased Ooma about one week ago from Amazon because of its sound quality, price, unlimited US calls, and no monthly fee features. It was delivered from Amazon on time as usual.

Before purchasing Ooma, I had tried many different VoIP products, such as Magic Jack, and they were all returned because of poor sound quality. After reviewing customer reviews from Amazon, I found the major problem of Ooma was the problem from installation and customer service. Because of the feature of non-monthly fee feature and previous good Amazon purchasing experiences, I decided to give it a try.

The product was packaged and document very well in a style similar to Apple. The sound quality is as good as the phone from my landline. My friends told me that they could not tell any difference of its sound quality from my landline phone during my testing calls.

I called customer service to ask some questions about my installation problems and some features of the device, I got all answers to the questions. The only problem I had is that I had to hold my calls for an average of 30 minutes.

Overall, I am very happy about this product so far and I am waiting for the company to port my phone number. This is an excellent phone device for those who want to save fixed monthly phone bills, or some advanced features with low annual fee. However, its rates of international phone calls are still not as competitive as most phone cards.

I am satisfied with our switch to Ooma. Although the sound quality is not quite as good as my old land line, it is pretty close and I've had no problems. I have 1.5M DSL and it is more than sufficient to operate the Ooma. The hardware is very solid and looks to be built for the long haul. My main concern prior to making the plunge was the customer service issues and difficulty other have had with porting. Fortunately Ooma provides an alternative to waiting on the phone for service. I was able to email the necessary information to complete the porting process - it was completely painless. Ooma is now available at more and more retailers, although I found the best price at Amazon. Of course the best thing is no more phone bills!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

The first thing you should know about this product is unless you plan to keep your land line or use the Ooma 2nd line or have DSL, You do not need the Ooma scout for each phone. If you disconnect your land line, you can plug Ooma into a wall jack, and all of the phones in you home will be on Ooma.

Also, I have Dish Network with two satellite boxes. I configured them to dial *99 before they dial out and I have had no problems. I also have a newer Brother fax/printer/scanner. There is some sort of safety built into it so it knows when it loses connection. It does not want to connect to the Ooma. However, there is probably a setting that can be changed on the fax machine to solve this. I just have not had the time to figure it out.

One more thing. If you go on vacation, or have a vacation home you can take this with you as long as there is an internet connection.

I also use Ooma in conjunction with the XLink ITC-BTTN Bluetooth Gateway so all of the phones in my home are also connected to my cell phone. I am very happy it worked with Ooma.

I wish I had known about this product two years ago. It works great and has excellent sound quality. It took me about 15 minutes to get it up and running. How can you beat it? I never used my land line, mostly because I didn't have caller ID. But caller ID and Voice mail are free on Ooma. Even if you choose to use the second line or move up to the premier service. How can you beat $99 a year? The premier services are awesome, such as having your cell phone ring when someone calls your Ooma number. I have no need for this myself, but there are a lot of nice options with this service.

Making changes to your service is very simple on their online site. You can check all of your incoming and outgoing calls, and also listen to your voice mail on any computer. It is very easy to use.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but Ooma Deserves this one. Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

It is simply inconceivable how bad Ooma's customer service is. I signed up at the beginning of January. Two months in, and they still have not ported my primary number (which means I'm paying both AT&T for continued service and Ooma for their so-called premier service).

I've submitted more than a dozen emails to customer support and have never received a single response from a human. A request for a tier-two technical support call-back was promised within the hour. That was three weeks ago. Since mid-February, their customer support line has either been continually busy or simply unanswered. Their system lets you sit on hold for 30 minutes and then automatically hangs up on you. I tried three successive times last week for a total of 90 minutes on hold only to be kicked off all three times.

There is simply no excuse for this. None. Stay far, far away from this product.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Where To Buy ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

After trying two different VOIP companies, we were afraid to waste the money on another. We first had *ingo (starts with an L) which was awful. Poor call quality, an adapter that had to be reset every day, dropped calls and awful customer serivce. We then moved on to Sunrocket which was great, except they went out of business 3 months after we paid for a year in advance. We looked at Vonage but the reviews made us pause. We called them 2 times and both times we experienced VERY pushy sales people who made us realize they weren't the company for us. We had COX for our home phone service which is a VOIP (In case you didn't know) but their prices do not reflect a VOIP service.

Last week we decided to take the plunge with OOMA after looking at the reviews and the price. We will break even in under a year so it wasn't a hard choice for us. All we can say is WOW!!!! Even the packaging was impressive. Everything was neat and honestly looked very nice and professional and organized. I haven't purcahsed anything in a long time that just looked nice in the package and made me stop just to admire what a good job they did. Setup was easy and would have been done under 15 minutes but we didn't have a phone jack near our cable modem so we had to wait until we got a 50 foot cord. Once that was done, HOLY COW, A service that works as advertised! The quality is beyond great. We love the premier features and the scout is cool. We were going to wait a while before deciding on the premier services but after only one day, we were so impressed that we had to have it. Now we can have 2 calls going on at the same time. We can't say enough good things about OOMA.

For those online gamers, we play online games and haven't had any network degragation (lag) in the games because of the OOMA.

If you are like us and have been on the fence for VOIP and have high speed internet, this is the service for you. (DSL owners may have a different experience since that service is typically slower). This is a awesome product and is worth every penny. We have tested the service with multiple phone calls lasting at least an hour long and haven't had ANY issues. People on the other end say it sounds like normal phone service. We haven't had any dropped calls, laggy sounds, weird sounds or any of the problems that go with a poor VOIP.

You can read about all the services on the website, but one that is undermarketed is the blacklist feature. Finally, those annoying telemarketer calls will be a thing of the past. We haven't found a feature that wasn't useful. It finally feels like a company is on our side and giving us the choice and tools to block those unwanted calls instead of allowing every telemarketer to contact us and tell us we need to refinance, buy or invest in their products. (Even after being on the Do not call list for years, and yes, we renewed our names on the website)

Again, this is a great product and represents the GOLD standard of what VOIP services should aim to be. If you want a VOIP that works, don't waste your money on onage (starts with a V) or those other nickle and dime VOIPs. Just pony up the $200 and see how much better free service can be.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I purchased an Ooma last week with the greatest of hope for dropping one land line and its accompanying long distance contract. However, the Ooma device just didn't live up to its billing. While incoming voice quality was very good, outbound voice quality was poor. I tried three different handsets, all with the same result. Outbound voices sounded far away and harsh... with an echo to people on the other end. Not good. I tried various speed settings for the outbound call from 0-4000 kbps, but those settings had no discernable impact on voice quality.

I e-mailed Ooma customer support for help and never received any response.

So, I gave up and sent the unit back to Amazon. I know that others have had better luck, but at least here in Comcast land, I could not get Ooma to deliver on its promise.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Buying ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

Bought this with so much anticipation. But am very disappointed with the call quality. My main complaints are:

1. Poor call quality: Had several dropped calls. I can hear the other party but they can't hear me and vice versa. Had to hang up and call back.
And the calls that did not have this problem had real bad static on the other side.

2. Internet connection was intermittent: After connecting this device as recommended, my internet connection got very flaky. Could not even browse some popular websites. But the connection was OK when I connected it to my router.

3. Customer Service: Never got hold of them. The two times I called to resolve the above two issues, I was on hold for a long time and got dropped. I was on hold for 39 minutes once before they dropped my call.

Reading all the positive reviews here, I was hoping I can cut the cord. Oh... well... not going to disconnect service from my local phone company yet. Hope that day comes soon...

Cheap ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

July 2009 update. Ooma still working great! One minor hiccup a few months ago that lasted only a few hours and we didn't even know about it.
Viatalk would have told me to check my router, settings, blah blah blah and I'd be down for days. Not so with Ooma- it fixes itself.
Did I mention it's FREE now? Yep no bills since January.
===================
After using VOIP since 2002. I have to say this is the best I have used.
Packet8 was ok in 2003.
Viatalk was ok then got horrible-down frequently.

Tips - I have Comcast cable internet. I plugged in Ooma on the back of my router NOT in between my rounter and modem like they say in literature. The rep confirmed this to me that it is better after your router.

Remember this is a FREE phone after you buy it. No bills ever. Thus probably why it is the same few customer reps I am talking and emailing with for the porting etc. Give them a chance. Many 1 star reviewers seem to be complaining about things as simple as not calling during business hours-If you do this Ooma puts you on hold, I don't know why.
Anyway I had no problem setting it up other than having to switch Ooma from after the modem to plugging Ooma into my router instead.
I set this up for my parents who are retired and no problems so far. Great call clarity too.
For the people who are being told they are backlogged on doing porting. All I can say is sorry. It took the 4 weeks for me and I started porting about January 12th. This is also about the time they started to really promote Ooma and carry it in retail stores like Best Buy which is where I got mine. So I guess this means they got a lot of business. And why not? What other phone can you buy for $199-$220 and NEVER have another phone bill? Give it a chance, it is popular.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

I cannot believe how this company stays in business they are so AWFUL! I purchased a new Ooma unit from Amazon, and opened the box to "activate" on-line, which is the only way to do it, and when I put in the device number, it said the product had already been activated (which is impossible) and the only way to use it is to call customer service. After getting a constant busy signal calling them, I was put on hold for 45 minutes, after which the phone just hung up on me without being anwered. This happened not once, not twice but 3 times! Finally I called Amazon customer service and am sending this piece of garbage back to them, thanks to Amazon's fantastic customer service. Stay as far away from Ooma and this company's products - not sure how they will ever survive and not go out of business with the so-called "support" they offer their customers.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
