ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills Review

Since I will be going to study abroad for a while, I decided to get Ooma.

I only used it for 10 minutes and so far, sound quality is very nice and clear.

Moreover, there is no lag between conversations. I tried other VOIP before and there were lags between conversations.(even if you make a call in the same house, you still get 1-2 second lag.) I hated that so I didn't like VoIP. I did not expect to see Ooma works well, but I am really surprised by Ooma. Customer Service is nice and fast. (Didn't have to wait long.)

Anyway Ooma is a very nice device and hopefully they will port my cellphone number (if not oh well..), so that I could use it in out-side of US.

However, I'm also planning to buy Samsung's 30 mile range cordless phone. So that I could use Ooma like a cellphone. It does not seem so bad because it's only [...].

[...]

Also, Ooma seems to slow down my internet connection. Response of the webpages been slower than before. Just let you know...I believe many VoIP slows down your internet speed. They use about 200-300kbps up&downstream bandwidth..

Overall, I give 4.5 star out of 5. For the life time, you won't have to pay for the telephone fee and it works virtually anywhere in the world.

My only concern is if this company will survive. It seems like there are many people use Ooma, so we'll see.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Easy set up, easy ordering, great customer service. A no brainer. My wife and I go out to dinner every month with the money we saved by switching to ooma. If you are paying the telephone company or your cable company or vonage every month you are throwing your money away.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

We had VOIP before from Packet 8, which only cost us $25 a month origionally which was $50 less than a land line. The service was inconsistant at best and the price crept up to $35 a month and then we heard about Ooma. Wow, great quality and we are able to spend $35 a month on something else. Buy one now before uncle Sam finds a way to tax these guys.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Cheap ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

Well, had read tons of ooma reviews and finally switched over from Packet8 VoIP to ooma. Sound quality is MUCH improved over previous VoIP behind Linksys WRT54G firewall (with Tomato / QoS enabled as before). Interface and setup works great! International calls have been very good and cost on par or less than before VoIP. BTW, read some of the negative threads about privacy (think that is void given that they are no longer using peer-to-peer technology as they had originally planned) and 'conspiracy' threads about 'how can ooma deliver this service and remain economically viable due to their business model' ... well, I finally figured that since they are using Linux + Asterisk open source as their platform then that should help their costs down. And if Skype can offer $2.95 per month 'all you can talk in USA and Canada' and make a profit ... then IMHO ooma has a reasonable chance of making a profit by offering free USA and charging $0.019 / minute to Canada, as well as their Premiere package (and subsequent follow on products). So do you own research, but for me ... definitely a winner so far and would recommend to my family and friends. As a matter of fact, now in the process of porting my phone number over to ooma as we speak!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Cheapest ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills

I have waited a two month to really test the Ooma service before writing a review.

Like many, I was a former Vonage user and my interest was piqued by "FREE" telephone service. I began reading reviews and noted that many of the negative reviews seemed be attributed to the fact that many did not read the terms of service or failed to understand the installation procedure for the device, and I can understand why. I am a techy, and thoroughly understand data and telephone networks, both via the communication standards and the physical wiring aspects.

Overall, Ooma does a really nice job of creating documentation to aid in the installation process. One of the real confusing issue is that, they really cannot document each unique issue that a user may face with their home wiring. This isn't the fault of Ooma, I as stated, they do a really great job of trying to document wiring issue and installation designs. They do it in a very articulate manner that is easy to understand (IMO) however, it can still be confusing.

I am not a person who is excited about packaging; however, if you are the packaging is of high quality and leads you to believe you are getting a very high quality product. The manuals are well written. I purchased the Ooma device plus the Scout; however, I have no real use of the Scout, I was not interested in using it and plan to sell the Scout on eBay, they seem to go for about $30.00.

On to the installation. The device itself appears to be built well, sturdy, and a bit heavy than what I anticipated. I decided to install the Ooma device behind my Internet facing router. This is NOT the recommended installation technique per the Ooma instruction. I initially had an issue getting the Ooma device to connect to the Ooma network. The lights on the Ooma device work in a diagnostic manner by lighting certain lights depending on the problem. After some time and rebooting the device (removing the power cord and plugging it back in) I got the device to sync with Ooma.

Over the next few weeks I paid close attention to the call quality and we did have time where calls would drop out. We could here the other party, but they could not hear us or vice versa.

I decided to move the Ooma device outside of my Internet facing router. Hence, the connection referenced the following: Cable Modem > Ooma > Router. These alleviate the need for that data (voice calls) to be processed via my Internet router. Overall call quality may have improved a little bit, but we still run into issues now and then. Overall, it had been acceptable IMO.

One of the issue I noted during installation was the white / flat network cable that was included with the Ooma device did not provide a very steady and high quality network connection. I believe this was one of the core reason I had issues connecting to the Ooma service initially and why it would lose connectivity sporadically. I did write Ooma about the problem but did not receive a response. I swapped out the cable with one of my own and the connection has been perfect since.

Speaking of, I should note that I ported my number from Vonage. During the port process, Ooma noted that it should take approximately 3-4 weeks and we would receive update via email.

Our porting process took about four weeks, during that time I did not receive any email update. I emailed Ooma for an update (at the same time I emailed their support folks about the network cable) and did not receive any update.

Overall, I have to make the assumption that if you need to contact support, you should set your expectations very low. Note that I did not try to call them, only attempted to email them, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Based on my experience, I would expect issues if I REALLY needed their help.

Oh, I almost forget, with the initial service, you also get to enjoy the Ooma premier service for the first month. I requested via email that our trial be extended since we really did not begin to use the service until our number was ported. I never received a response to my request. In all, we have not subscribed to the Ooma premier service, the only thing I liked about the enhanced service was when a voicemail was received, they would email you transcription of the voicemail (not always accurate) and also include an MP3 of the recording.

With the base service, they still email you; however, only include the number of the caller and notification that you have a voicemail and the length. You need to login to the Ooma website to listen to the voicemail. Overall, I am ok with this.

In closing, I have had a positive experience with Ooma; however, if I place myself in the shoes of a novice user, my experience may not have been so positive. In the same sense, many of the issues users may run into may not be Ooma's fault; however, since he average person just spent a considerable amount of $$, they will likely be very unhappy with Ooma.

Overall call quality has been acceptable to me. We don't use the home line heavily so when we do, it is reliable.

For the price, I am happy with the service and hope it will be around for a considerable amount of time!

This is a great device for those who want to permanently get rid of their landline phone charges and hidden fees.

Others have already given detailed descriptions about the device, I'll just give you my personal opinion:

Pros -
1) Easy installation
2) Excellent design
3) Reasonable customer service
4) Free landline VoIP technology services

Cons -
1) Need an Internet Connection
2) The Ooma hub requires a wall jack connection in order for the Ooma Scout to work

Bottom line:

Its a great investment for those who really don't want the hassle of dealing with the phone companies again. Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

Just a quick note about ooma. Super easy to set up and it worked perfect right out of the box. Tested for a week to be sure the quality was good (it is) then began the process to port my current number over to ooma. This took about 2 weeks and went off without a hitch. I couldn't be more pleased. We also ordered ooma premier to get a second phone line. I am very impressed with Ooma. I was a little skeptical, but after I installed and started using I was very happy. It works well. I did not sign up for the Ooma Premier, but I did port my AT&T number and the porting was very easy. It was ported the date Ooma's technical folks said it would be. I have a good bandwith so I haven't had any problems. From time to time, the connection does not go through, but when you try it again it works fine.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

When I got the ooma from Amazon I plugged the Hub in behind my Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato and after doing the online registration I was off and running (or making calls). I did install the Hub's Phone Port to my Line 1 house wiring (which powers most of my phones), and installed the Hub's Wall Port to my Line 2 house wiring (which powers the scout in the kitchen).

Just signed up for the Premier Service to keep the 2nd line (plus many other features; free service gives you a dial tone, free calls to anywhere in the US, call waiting, and caller ID so you need the premier service to get all the other features) and began the porting process. Had to talk to customer service once due to a billing issue and they said they would take care of it. The next day I got a call back from ooma support saying all was taken care of. All I can say is excellent customer service!

Now I've seen people compare this to MagicJack and I can say MagicJack is probably good for callers on the go or a cheap way to make calls on a low budget but it is not a phone replacement service (need a computer on to make it work, can't port numbers, and reportedly customer service is terrible). Ooma on the other hand IS A PHONE SERVICE REPLACEMENT! You can port your number, integrate the system into existing home phone wiring, and the customer service is great! So each service has its purpose and caters to two entirely different consumer groups, but if you're looking for a home phone service replacement you can't go wrong with the ooma.

Bottom Line is I'm very impressed so far!!

I've had the ooma system for 6 weeks now, and love it. However I still have not had my number ported over yet, and it has been over 5 weeks now. AT&T won't let go of my number and won't give ooma a date that it will be transported. Also when I went to get a dry loop DSL for the number to be ported, AT&T just would not make it easy on me - all kinds of jumping through hoops. I will update once number is ported.

UPDATE 7/15/09
Well it finally happened, the number was ported today after 7 long weeks. Goodbye AT&T, and hello to freedom! Thanks Ooma!!!!!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

This does NOT, I said NOT, replace your actual phone service. You MUST, have a phone service in your house from a phone company. This will NOT, operate on it's own. It is no different than having instant messenger that several sites like Yahoo and Hotmail offer for free and you don't need another phone in the house. This would be a great idea if you could get rid of your basic phone package to use it but you can't and you must have internet also, high speed. I don't know how they can say it saves you, it does NOT!!!Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.

ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills Best Quality

So far we have had a positive experience with ooma, but here are a few things they do not tell you:

1) HEAT: Those cool-looking ooma hubs run warm on top, and downright hot underneath. Kinda strange because the power supply is outside. How much current are chips in this thing using, and why? When it burns out, I will have to plunk down another $200. I'm thinking, maybe that is how they plan to make their money.

2) INTERNATIONAL: The "famous" prefix number, 1019898, routes calls to a toll service whose domestic fee is 10 cents to connect plus 2 cent per minute in 6 minute increments. Ooma being free is cheaper -- but wait, not for international calls. To the United Kingdom, 1019898 charges 1 cent per minute to reach a land line and 15 cents for a mobile, while ooma charges about double (1.9 cents and 33 cents, respectively).

That's it so far.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
