We looked at ooma when it first came out, but at $450 it seemed too expensive for us at the time. Now that ooma has a new business model and our ATT bills have gone up, the numbers made more sense. With only $200 for initial cost, and $100/year if we wanted the Premier services, we could try for a while and see if it worked. Our phone bills were typically $70 per month or more.

Here's the logic we used:
1) local phone service with CLID, CW, etc. is costing us $30/month. We'd want to keep a basic landline for 911 just for a while, but it does seem as thought high-speed internet services are becoming as reliable as the telephone system (congestion issues aside). We'd probably drop those costs to $15-20 per month.
2) National long-distance is costing us $15/month, and would be free via ooma
3) We're on an international plan with ATT that gets us per-minute prices comparable to ooma, but costing us $5/mo.
Overall, we'd probably save $35-40 per month on ooma. The initial cost would take us 5-6 months to break even, and with Premier, we'd need another 2-3 months per year. So the first year would save us only 3-5months worth at $35-40. In the second year, it gets much better.

So -- now that we decided it's financially viable, we had to check out ease of use. There are many discussions on the web around various limitations of the service. Probably the biggest concern is the distributed termination concept originally announced by ooma. Personally, I think they had a great idea there, but it certainly had it's risks, and I don't believe anyone can build a device that will 100% identify any security threats. With more hunting, I found announcements from ooma that their local termination was no longer used. Fully reassured, I decided to go for it.

Installation and registration were incredibly simple. The Premier trial is a nice way to learn about other services. Initially, we started with a local line connected to the hub, but since the voice quality is outstanding on ooma, we've decided to move our old number across and get a new local number for 911. That also allows you to take advantage of the Premier services more fully. We did not originally intend to get a second ooma number, but now that it's available to us, we're starting to see how it could be useful. We're going to put a second line into the guest room.

Overall, I couldn't be happier with the service -- very user friendly interface and really good voice quality.

The only addition I'd like is the ability to use Bluetooth headsets or direct digital connected phones with ooma. It's a shame to have an analog connection for your home phone which then does A/D conversion for the DECT wireless link. Voice quality should improve slightly with the new "telo" basestation announced at 2009 CES. Hope it gets Bluetooth too!

My dad, a retired 74 year old, was looking for a way to reduce his $65/mo phone bill. I looked at Vonage, but didn't see how he could save all that much. Then I saw OOMA and told him about it. He got very exited and bought before I even had time to ask questions. He then ordered up basic DSL at $20/month and connected the phone lines to the house properly ( usually a $200 charge, but my Dad used to be an electrician ).
He installed the OOMA to his new DSL modem and BANG was using it right away. Even with a 768/384 basic dsl he had astonishingly good call quality. He liked his new number and cancelled the old phone line, going all digital. That was a few months ago. He gets an occiasional echo, but overall it's perfectly fine and even clearer than his old phone line. So a 74 year old grandpa had no problem.

I then told a friend and she went out to Best Buy to get OOMA that same day and got the same results with her DSL. She had a little higher bandwidth than my Dad and she thought it worked great. Plugging her fax directly to the OOMA and using the SCOUT her for phone, she even managed to be able to send and recieve the occasional fax. She emailed over the form for the phone number port, but there was a bit of an error on her part. Nonetheless, ATT ported her number - getting the DSL back on was a hassle and a $200 re-install fee. For awhile she had no phone or DSL until they turned everything back on. However, it's all working fine now.

So, I decided I was dragging my feet and bought an OOMA too. Ordered from amazon it took a week to arrive. Now, I have cable internet. Which is a bit more complex. I also don't have a phone jack or a computer anywhere near my cable modem. I have everything wireless. So, I hooked up my OOMA per the instructions and it worked right away. However, call quality was terrible. it was very choppy. I played with the QoS settings all day and got no decent results. I called the cable company and they checked the signal - finding an issue which turned out to be a faulty modem. Got a new modem and it was crystal clear. THEN, I noticed at certain times of the day it would get choppy again. Since cable internet is shared bandwidth I realized that my signal was varying WAAY too much for a clear connection. So, I increased my bandwidth ( $10 more a month ). And MAN it was clearer and I never had a disconnect. Once in a while I get an echo, but that is maybe a few times a week out of several calls. So, if you have cable internet you may need to increase the bandwidth - case in point during the Oscars my internet came to a complete crawl and so did the OOMA. Now, I got my phone ported. I *had* to, there were no more numbers left in my area code. It's $40, but it's still cheaper than a $90/mo phone bill from ATT. After one month I got my phone ported from ATT - which for about 24 hrs I had no service on that number. The following day it worked like a champ. Internaitonal calls are less than half of what I was paying on a low-rate calling card before. I can basically call overseas for several hours for only $10!

NOTES:
If the power goes out or your little kid unplugs the power, turn on the modem, then the OOMA, then the router or computer. Do it slowly in series. If I don't my internet comes to a complete halt.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones, I've always been able to contact customer service within 5-10 minutes. USE the forums, they are super helpful.

The sound quality rivals my landline and nobody knew that I had changed to VOIP until I told them. Setup was pretty straightforward and the product is easy to use. I had one problem with the setup, which turned out not to be the fault of the unit, and was able to reach a helpful rep quickly. There are only two minor negatives that I encountered. I had difficulty faxing anything beyond 4 pages. I kept losing the line connection. Initially, I could not fax at all until I started putting *99 before the number. Also, when I had a question about porting my number, I was on hold for 20 minutes. Once I got a rep, they were very helpful and professional. You can't expect instant customer service from a startup company, who does not generate revenue form the normal monthly charges, to give the same support as other companies who are better funded. I believe that 20 minutes is too long but am willing to put up with a little bit of hassle to save lots of money ($500 yearly). Those who gave this unit a low rating based just on customer service are not looking at the total picture. That is, Ooma puts out a great product at a reasonable price. It remains to be seen whether the company survives financially. However, I only need five months to break even which I feel is a very low risk. I also did not have a problem paying the extra to port my number because I felt that I was helping to support a great company. This is unusual for me because I am very cheap. I have never been so excited about a product. Now, if Ooma could help me get rid of my monopoly cable provider, I would be really pleased. I just received my purchase from Amazon and was able to fully install the Ooma Hub and Scout in less than 10 minutes. I made some calls and love the quality ... those I called also gave high marks for the sound quality.

If you haven't seen the new version (Ooma Telo) that's coming out, you may want to take a look at it to see which type of bundle fits your needs best. If you've already got enough phones and you're happy with your existing phones (cordless or otherwise), I think the current Hub and Scout(s) are a perfect fit. If you have a home office, need multiple lines, or just want the Broadband Answering Machine functionality in a few rooms, the Hub and Scout system is great.

However, if you're looking to get new high-end cordless phones ... I'd wait for the Ooma Telo. First, it looks awesome ... the Ooma product designers should be commended, both product designs so far have been attractive and user-friendly. Second, the sound quality of Ooma's Telo has the potential to be even better. It's a good idea to think about this decision, because the two systems won't really work together, since the new Telo works on wireless connectivity.

Now, onto the current Hub and Scout model. The look and feel ... spectacular. I didn't give enough value to the Broadband Answering Machine in my mind until using it. It's SOOO convenient compared to using a handset ... and having the call screening is great!

The sound quality is fantastic. I've used Vonage for years ... and I've been happy with it. Ooma's sound quality is as good as or better in my opinion.

The setup was so easy, it's ridiculous. Now, I did do some reading on reviews here and the Ooma forum, and picked up a lot of tips from other users. I've always found the best customer service is often from the users like ourselves, but Ooma moderators have many good answers and tips on their forum.

The price ... are you kidding me!!! No monthly fees, and Amazon's price was great!

The competition ... really, is there any? Vonage is the option I was most familiar with. Ooma is a better option in my opinion, for the lifetime price of 7 or 8 months of Vonage. Magic Jack ... after reading reviews and comparisons, there really was no comparison. MJ seems to have lower quality, requires a PC always on, and of course the features are much more limited.

I ordered the system several weeks ago and received it within 3 days. Set-up went very smooth. No hitches or glitches. It took about 20 minutes total time and I had a working phone (including extension). Ooma works exactly as advertised. Excellent voice quality(actually better than my old conventional phone line), simple to operate (like an ordinary phone), no monthly bills, free calling anywhere in the U.S. to anyone. I did some research before purchasing Ooma.
