I've been with Ooma since the end of December and have enjoyed excellent service and voice quality while getting rid of my Verizon phone bill entirely. I may be the record holder for the fastest phone number port, which took about two weeks.
Yesterday, Ooma experienced an outage along with a lot of other large Silicon Valley companies due to a problem with an Internet Service Provider. It is frustrating to have phone service down, but Ooma made the wait easier by posting nearly hourly updates on the progress that was being made. I've never received updates when my electricity goes off or when my Comcast internet service is down. My electric company just plays a recorded message that they are aware of the outage and that service will be restored as soon as possible. Ooma customers using a computer to check the Ooma forums got much more than that.
I saw a couple of messages on Amazon that say Ooma is a scam and cuts people off after three months. I wish the poster would have taken time to be better informed of the issues. He (or she) wasn't cut off, there was a service outage that lasted about six hours at the extreme, and some customers had service in a shorter amount of time.
I think Ooma will work to make their system more robust after yesterday's outage. I have read of customers who have used Ooma for more than a year, and this is their first outage. If we use the frequency of outages to determine which companies are scams, then Comcast has to be the biggest scam company I deal with, and my electric company the second biggest. And no, I don't consider them to be scams. Outages happen, things break, people make mistakes. Its easier to wait with Ooma, though, because they did keep their website updated and we weren't just sitting around waiting for our free phone service to return. We had an idea what was happening. You can pay more for phone service from Verizon or AT&T, but you won't be guaranteed there won't be outages, and you likely won't get the frequent updates as to the progress that is being made to restore service. I'm staying with Ooma!
And one final thing. I even use Ooma with my old Tivo Series 1 that must use a modem to dial in even though Ooma says that it likely won't work. That should give you an idea of the voice quality. Our Tivo is extremely sensitive, having been struck by lighting and marginally repaired, and it still works with Ooma.
Give Ooma a try, if you find it isn't for you just take advantage of Amazon's return policy.
