I've had the ooma service for two months, and I am very pleased. Thanks to all of you for providing great feedback that helped me break my dependence on AT&T. Here are the relevant facts I gleaned or learned from my research process:
1) Check your internet connection at speedtest.net before making the switch. I opted to move from DSL to cable before even getting the phone system, as some people complained about signal quality at lower bandwidth connections. You may want to do the same since there are several negative comments in these posts related to this issue;
2) The ability to port your home phone number is a great feature, and was the primary reason I went with Ooma over MagicJack. Since we have kids and have our number tied into several accounts (Dish TV, etc) this was an important consideration for us. However, be aware that it costs $40 (I understood that up front) and takes about a month to get accomplished (I did not understand this). Nevertheless, the Ooma customer service team handled it well, and also provided me with a temporary phone number until my number was ported.
3) There are rumors that this company is on shaky financial ground. They have had two "rescue" cash infusions that I am aware of, so I hope to see this company gain traction and really take off as sales increase. I am crossing my fingers on this one...
4) The hub and scout systems are well designed and function very well. They were also very easy to install. The instructions were superb.
5) My experience so far with customer service is very good. The only slight complaint is that it sometimes takes them a while to respond to e-mails (2-3 days). Call them instead.
6) I paired the Ooma system with the Panasonic DECT6 phones (available on Amazon) and I get a great signal and great range. Our land line phone systems always had quality issues (never adequately resolved by AT&T, but they blamed it on "dirty" phone lines) so we have actually upgraded our phone system's quality by moving to Ooma.
7) We chose to keep our land line for two reasons (which Oooma allows you to do as an option); one, we went through 5 days without electricity last year due to Hurricane Ike, but always were able to keep in touch via land line phone, and two, our house alarm system uses the landline connection to transmit alarm signals (don't forget about this!).
I love this company's business plan and the quality of the phone service from this system. This has been a very good decision for me; I have better phone service and am saving about $60/month on phone service. Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
