I have other VOIP service and decided to see how Ooma was to install and use.

These are my first impressions, as I just got it. Later if appropriate I'll update.

The box is great. It is a large blackish box, with 2 smaller boxes inside. The two smaller boxes are labeled "Core" and "Scout".

At this time I am just testing the service, and have no need for the scout. I did open and checked out the scout, but did not install it.

The Core was easy to pull out and set up. Instead of setting up behind my modem and before my router, my Ooma Core is sitting behind the router. It seems to be working just fine there.

Set up took about 3 minutes, and 2 minutes to double check. Once powered on, the Ooma Core tab glows red. This indicates no service. All new Ooma Core's start this way.

After hardware install. I went to www.ooma.com/activate per the activation instruction pamphlet. This prompted me with some questions about how the Ooma was to be set up.

For example, was a normal phone line going to be used with the Ooma (my answer, no). Was the Ooma going to port or get a new phone number (my answer was new number).

The Ooma website then asked me for a phone number in the area the area code and first 3 digits. Once given, it offered local numbers at a different exchange (5 numbers were offered). I selected one, and it indicated that this would be my new number.

The final page asked me for personal information (name, email, address, home phone, zip, etc). For the Ooma,to set up the E911 service and for CallerID name.

Once the information was entered, a summery page was presented to print.

My Ooma Core was still red at this time. About 2 minutes after entering the last information my Ooma Core started to glow blue. This indicated the unit was active and my number would work.

It did, within 10 minutes of opening the boxes, my Ooma was ready to make and receive calls at a new free phone number. We tested by having some friends call, and calling a few via Ooma.

Audio quality is comparable to a regular phone line, but the dial tone is different, instead its a sort of Ooma type sound.

If this continues to work well, I won't hesitate to recommend Ooma to friends and family. My weekend goal is to try to fax via Ooma.
