I have been using VOIP for over 5 years now. First with Packet8 and then Vonage for 3 years, but now I have switched to Ooma. So far, I have used Ooma for a month and I am extremely pleased. Currently, Ooma doesn't have every feature that Vonage offers but Ooma does have the majority of them and a couple things Vonage doesn't offer.
First off, for us the call quality is exactly the same. We had good call quality with Vonage and Ooma sounds just as good if not better.
How Ooma is better than Vonage:
1.) Price (DUH!) Vonage is, at best, $250 a year plus about $50 in taxes and fees every year. Ooma costs $200 once, with no further fees. We are keeping our premier account which does cost $100 a year (no taxes or fees on top of that) but that gave us free number porting and gives us a 2nd line.
2.) Ooma allows you to listen to your voicemail with a simple press of 1 button on the Ooma core or scout. Vonage you have to call into your voicemail
3.) We used to have trouble getting Vonage to display caller ID correctly. So far, Ooma has been perfect with caller ID recognition.
4.) With Ooma I can record a conversation just by hitting the voicemail button while speaking with the person. This is great when those customer service people are promising you something that you think they might not fulfill tomorrow. This gives you proof of the promises they made.
5.) Ooma actually had local numbers in our area.
Things Ooma lacks that we used with Vonage:
1.) Vonage has a feature where if your Vonage system goes down (internet goes out or power goes out) then they will automatically forward your calls to your cell phone. With Ooma, you have to either always forward (or simul ring) or never. You can't set it up to do it only when the Ooma is offline.
2.) Vonage has phones that work like cell phones as long as you are anywhere with a WI-FI internet connection.
3.) Vonage offers a soft-phone. (Phone using a computer only)
4.) The Vonage online account seems to be more powerful and robust.
In general I am much happier with Ooma than Vonage, mainly because of the money it saves me. However, I also think that the few things Ooma lacks that Vonage has will change soon because Ooma has been rolling out new features very quickly.
I would highly recommend anyone and everyone with a high speed internet connection to cut their phone bill (whether its a landline or some other VOIP company) and switch to Ooma.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
