The OOMA voice-over-internet system has been rated the best in terms of quality, and I've certainly found that to be true after months of use. I'm far from an early adopter, and not all that tech savvy, but this is easy! The instructions are clear--it's really a plug-in.

What you need to use the Scouts is a little unclear, however. First, you do not need to keep landline service. But you DO need your landline wiring, which turned out to be a problem for us. I wanted to keep the main unit in my office and a scout downstairs in my husband's. But since we have separate land lines, this didn't work out. But that's the only problem we had--I bought an inexpensive $25 handset, hooked it up, and voila!

One concern with the VoIP systems is whether the companies that offer them will survive. I have hopes for OOMA, however. They got a capital infusion in the fall, landed a big electronics retailer for distribution, and got a great write-up in Fortune magazine. Who knows what will happen in this economy, but I hope this one is a survivor.
