Ooma rocks.
After first paying too much for Qwest, then getting HORRIBLE hardware, software and service from Vonage for two years, I gave ooma a try, and now my local and national long distance is FREE. I had neven heard of ooma before searching for VOIP at Amazon.com. After reading the reviews at Amazon, then hitting the ooma website, I placed an order for the ooma "core system" (a hub and a scout) and an addtional Scout.
Amazon held up their end of the deal as usual: No fuss, no drama. Even though I didn't automatically get the discount that was offered, it took only an email to solve, and a credit instantly appeared on my bank card.
Anyway, the OOBE was excellent. Cool packaging, excellent technical documentation (Quick start guide and User Guide) and most importantly SUPER easy to set up and use. Within about 20 minutes I was up and running.
One of the coolest things about the ooma is the voicemail. It works like the best of POTS (plain old telephone service) and VOIP. You can pickup your voicemail like conventional VOIP, by calling in or by logging in (internet or email), BUT you can also pick up your message by clicking 'play' on the ooma hub or ooma scout, You can also screen calls just like the good old days on a conventional answering machine.
There are a lot more good things: number porting, additional phone numbers, your choice of area codes, caller ID, etc. Really everything that you would expect from an old analog line OR from VOIP.
Downsides? MAYBE a couple...VOIP and 911 freaks some people out. I think that will get fixed. Maybe I should be more worried than I am... Also, there are not as many area codes "reserved" as you would think. You get a temporary number while your number is ported, and it's nicer if it's your real area code so you don't have to dial 1-AREA CODE- then the number. It ain't no thing for receiving calls, since I just had my old Vonage number forwarded to my new ooma number.
If I hade one nit to pick, it would be that you have to dial '1' to call long distance. All in all, very easy, and no monthly phone bill EVER AGAIN.
Go to the ooma web site. There is a good little video that explains better than I ever could. I'm very happy with ooma. Even my wife, a Luddite in technophobes clothing, loves it. She HATED Vonage (but not as much as I did).ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service BillsGet more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
