ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills Right now

I purchased the ooma core system about a month ago when it was on sale at Amazon for $198.00. My goal is to eliminate my $61.00/month Verizon local & long distance calling plan.

Set-up was easy, I connected my telephone line as I planned on porting my number.

The quality is very good (often consistent with what I experienced on my old analog line) running on Verizon DSL at 1.5Mbps down and 768K up. Very rarely I experience transient echo which doesn't last more than a second or two - not enough for me to bother contacting support at this point.

The features such as blacklisting and voicemail available through the ooma Lounge are included and I have found them to work well thus far.

If you are someone who is not adept at configuring your home electronics -ooma may not be for you just yet as I note below - their customer service needs work.

Customer support is lacking as it took me a day and a half to speak with someone about porting my number. I called recently to get an update on porting and waited 15 minutes on hold before speaking with someone. Once you do get someone on the line I have found them to always be knowledgeable and helpful though not always the most pleasant. I realize that the availability of customer service is important to some but I'm fine with the customer service hassles as I figure I am getting a great product at relatively low cost.

Update 1/16/09:

The porting of my phone number was completed two days ago (1/14/09) - one day ahead of schedule! Too late for me - but new ooma customers can now complete the number porting request online instead of having to call support. There is also an online search capability that allows you to determine if your number can be ported.
