February 20, 2009 - In January, I wrote a three-star review of Ooma, praising it's ease of use, but criticizing Ooma's customer service. The original review is shown below. Now, a little more than a month later, I'd like to tell you what has changed.

First, my original Ooma box had an annoying defect which kept one of the units lights on constantly. Contacting customer service, Ooma determined that the unit was defective, and promptly shipped a new unit, which works fine. They provided a postage-paid label to let me ship the defective unit back to them. Nice and easy response to a technical problem.

Second, I contacted Ooma to port my home number. That process took about three weeks -- just as Ooma said it would on their web site. The process was easy and seamless. Again, nice work by Ooma customer service.

Third, it looks like my original criticism with long wait times for customer service has been resolved. I have been able to get someone on the phone rather quickly. The Ooma team seems polished and trained -- and they speak English!

I'm pretty happy with my Ooma service. The phone works great, and they seem to be working hard to resolve customer service issues.

Original Review

I installed Ooma in about ten minutes. Setup instructions are clear and easy to follow. The service initiated quickly and I had a clear dial tone and was able to use the phone with no problems.

Now, here's the hard part. I have tried day after day to reach someone to get my home number ported to Ooma. So far, no luck. The Ooma web site doesn't let you do this, although you can try sending an email to technical support. I did that, too, but without a response. So, you are left with waiting on line to talk with someone. And, after you are on hold for twenty minutes, you'll get cut off and have to start again.

So, what I have now is two phone numbers -- my home phone number and an Ooma phone number. I really can't cancel my home number until someone at Ooma can talk to me about porting my home number to their system.

I'm sure a lot of this has to do with the number of people installing the product, but Ooma should at least offer a web-based way to transfer your home phone number without waiting on the phone.

This is a great solution to get rid of your land line. But, bad support can wreck the reputation of even a good product like this.Get more detail about ooma Core VoIP Phone System with No Monthly Phone Service Bills.
